M Check Your Bike
Once in a while, we strongly recommend doing an M-Check. This involves inspecting all the main parts of your bike, ensuring everything is in working order. It only takes 3-4 minutes and helps prevent any nasty surprises on the road.
- are the spokes all tight with no movement?
- is your chain oiled & your gears changing smoothly & correctly?
- are both tyres oumnped up with enough pressure?
- is the seatpost clamp tight?
- is the saddle fitted tightly & at correct angle?
- do the cranks spin freely with no side to side movement?
- are the pedals fitted correctly?
- are the brakes working correctly?
- are both the stem and handlebars aligned & secured correctly?
- are the brake pads or brake blocks worn beyond the wear indicators?
- are the nuts or QR levers tight & fitting in both wheels correctly?
Bike Cleaning and Lubricating
A clean, well lubricated chain improves performance and prolongs its lifespan:
- Dirt and grime can build up on the chain, causing it to wear out faster. Clean your chain every 5-10 rides using a chain scrubber or basic sponge
- When lubricating, choose between wet or dry lubricants
- Wet Lube is great for rainy conditions as it repels water but tends to attract more dirt in dry weather
- Dry Lube is great for dry conditions, as it attracts less dust but washes off easily if it is raining.
Washing Your E-Bike
Just like a regular bike, you can wash your e-bike. Remove the battery first and avoid getting water on the connectors. Dry the bike thoroughly, especially the connectors, and never use a pressure washer as it can damage the battery and motor.
Keep The Battery Healthy
- Avoid Extreme Temperatures Always charge and store your e-bike battery at room temperature. If it’s been exposed to cold, let it warm up before charging. Avoid direct heat to keep your battery in good condition.
- Avoid Low Battery Keep your battery above 10% capacity to maintain its efficiency. For storage, ensure the battery is between 30%-60% charged. It’s fine to recharge after short rides so your battery is ready for the next adventure.
- Charging Your Battery How-To When charging, place your battery on a non-flammable dry surface away from heat sources. Don’t cover the battery or charger while charging, and always use the original charger provided.
- Storing Your E-Bike Store the battery in a dry place at cool temperatures. Aim for a charge level between 30-60% when storing the battery for extended periods.
Check and Maintain The Tyres
Regular tyre checks are essential for both safety and efficiency:
- Ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Under inflated tyres can reduce battery range
- Inspect your tyres regularly for signs of wear, such as punctures, cracks, or worn-out threads. Replace them when necessary to ensure a safe ride
Inspect and Maintain the Brakes
- Brakes are crucial for your safety, so ensure they’re always in good conditions:
- Regularly check the brake pads. If they are too thin, replace them to maintain optimal stopping power
- Avoid getting cleaning product residue on the brake disc, as this can lead to brake discs becoming contaminated and reducing efficiency
- Make sure the brakes are properly aligned. Depending on your system, regularly inspect brake cables or hydraulic fluid for wear or leaks
